My Favorite Beaches, Sosua Beach

Sosua Beach or Playa (ˈpla.ʝa) Sosua in Spanish is in the north providence of Puerto Plata. It is a public access beach in the heart of the city of Sosua. The crystal clear water makes it seem more like natural swimming pool than the ocean. The beach is canopied with almond trees and sea grapes giving perfect shade from the Caribbean’s tense sun. The beach is lined with different restaurants, bar, and souvenir shops selling everything from local made art, funky jewellery, and the obligatory Presidente Beer tee shirt. The restaurants serve a variety of local and international food.

Local venders lazily stroll the beach selling local made candies, oysters, offering massages, or enticing to take you out on a boat ride for a variety of different activities. About 100 yards offshore is a nice reef that has different coral and fish species. It is great for a pre-lunch snorkel. The waters are normally calm compared to its neighbour Cabarete. You can rent lounge chairs and umbrellas for a few dollars and restaurants will delivery food and drinks directly to you.

Sosua Beach is also the takeoff point for Adventuresque’s scuba diving excursion. The surrounding Sosua area is full of a variety of coral reefs. Many of them were on the brink of dying, but many local dive shops, members of the community, and environmental protection has worked for nearly 2 decades on reforesting them. Sosua Beach is great place to spend the day relaxing, snorkelling, or going for a boat ride.
