Canyoneering, know as canyoning in Europe, as well as for us in the Dominican Republic, is an eco-adventure sport that requires various techniques to travel through a canyon. These techniques include hiking, swimming, rappelling (abseiling), climbing, jumping, and scrambling.
In mountaineering the main goal is getting to the top, canyoneering is all about getting to the bottom. The term derived from pioneering and mountaineering. America is a nation that’s backbone is from “-eerings”.
Canyoneering shares a few things with rock climbing. The biggest similarities are some of the equipment. The harnesses, helmets, and ropes, are familiar items. After that everything else changes. Technical descents through a moving water environment require specialized equipment. Everything used in canyoneering must also be able to get wet. It is truly a unique sport.
Canyoneering did not start as a recreational activity. It has roots with indigenous cultures, early European explorers, and American settlers. Before modern transportation laid roads, highways, and built cities, canyoneering was used for transportation.
Our Canyon is ideal for trying out canyoneering for the first time or testing your canyoneering skills. Rio Blanco has cut it’s way like a slow moving saw over the millennia into the mostly limestone bedrock. The Canyon is full of impressive waterfalls, breathtaking gorges, and beautifully sculpted walls, that it as equally impressive visually as it is adventurous.
The canyon also offers many rappels, waterfall jumps some pretty big cliff jumps from just a few feet to nearly 65 feet. These of course are options.
Adventuresque is excited to offer this high adventure tour as part of our adventure itinerary. Canyoneering is an activity that few North Americans get to experience and this tour is usually one of the highlights to Adventuresque guests.
“The Magic Mushroom.” Offering 2 great rappels or one rappel and a 50 foot jump option. After a short climb and hike out of the canyon we will meet our transportation and have a great lunch.
“Ciguapa Falls” is an area that has the most waterfalls and areas to swim. The day is finished with a hike out of the canyon where you will meet your donkey to take to the rest of the way back to base camp and wonderfully prepared Dominican Lunch and a few celebratory beers, Cokes, or Gatorades.
